THE first analogue channel is being switched off in Bromsgrove this Wednesday, April 6, as the digital switchover gets under way.

And Digital UK, the independent body in charge of the process, is now stepping up its awareness campaign in time for Wednesday, April 20, when all analogue channels will be switched off permanently.

The first stage will begin in the early hours of the morning when BBC Two is switched off from the Bromsgrove transmitter.

New and existing viewers with Freeview, BT Vision and Top Up TV need to retune their TVs or digital boxes in order to pick up all the services available.

Residents will need to retune again on April 20 when the remaining analogue channels, BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5, are permanently switched off in the early hours, and the power of the existing Freeview signal increased.

After retuning, viewers may find they have more than one regional service available. Digital UK’s website or advice line offer advice on retuning and selecting the correct regional service.

Large warning messages are to be broadcast on analogue channels, reminding viewers to get ready for switchover.

There is a Switchover Help Scheme which urges eligible older and disabled viewers yet to respond to let them know whether they need practical support, including on choice of equipment, installation and aftercare.

Peter Monteith, digital UK’s regional manager, said: “Most viewers are ready for switchover and many are looking forward to getting digital TV for the first time.

“While the process will be straightforward for most people, inevitably some viewers may need a bit of extra help so we are working with the Switchover Help Scheme and local charities to offer support for those who need it throughout the switchover period.”
