PEOPLE entering the village of Claines will receive a new welcome from now on, with the installation of a sign, welcoming people to the home of Grand National winner Pineau De Re.
The 11-year-old National Hunt racing star was trained in the village by Dr Richard Newland, and raced to victory this April in Aintrey, ridden by jockey Leighton Aspell.
The village launched its new signs at both entrances to Claines with the help of funding from Worcestershire County Council’s highways contractor Ringway.
Councillor John Smith OBE, cabinet member for highways, said: "We felt Pineau De Re's thrilling victory and the fantastic achievement of trainer, Dr Richard Newland, deserved some recognition in their proud community.
"The new signs now in place will highlight this famous win, a real positive for the area, now and in the future."
Dr Newland added: "The signs look very impressive. Since the Grand National victory we've been receiving quite a lot of attention, which has been fantastic for everyone involved. We're all extremely proud.”
