CHILDREN at the Pear Tree Children’s Centre in Bromsgrove have been busy collecting packaging for a new recycling scheme being launched to raise money for Action for Children.

The scheme run by recycling company Terracycle, has seen a public access collection box placed outside the children’s centre on Broad Street in Bromsgrove, where people can recycle various types of waste packaging which cannot be included in the local council kerbside recycling collections and would otherwise end up in local landfill or being incinerated.

For each item of waste that’s collected through the scheme Action for Children receives approximately two pence.

Tina Rennie, who arranged for the collection boxes to be located at the Pear Tree Children’s Centre, said: “The Pear Tree Children’s Centre is delighted to have signed up as a drop off location for TerraCycle’s Ella’s Kitchen Brigade, Johnson’s Baby Wipes Packaging Brigade, Coffee Packaging Brigade, McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade and the Tassimo Brigade. These recycling programmes make it possible for the people of Bromsgrove to recycle waste packaging which is normally too difficult or costly for local councils to recycle. As such, Bromsgrove is among the first communities in the UK to offer recycling drop off points for these materials which would otherwise end up in landfill.

“Local people can contribute by dropping off their waste baby food pouches, baby wipes packaging, biscuit wrappers, coffee refill bags, coffee bean bags, single serving coffee sachets and coffee jar lids plus Tassimo TDISC’s and outer flow wrap packaging, to our collection box at the Pear Tree Children’s Centre on Broad Street from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.”

The collected packaging is recycled into plastic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins. For more information on exactly what can be recycled, visit terracycle.co.uk/en-UK/brigades.html.
