BROMSGROVE's High Street post office will be moved to WHSmith, despite customers' concerns about space, services and accessibility.

After a six week public consultation, the Post Office has decided to relocate the branch 270 metres down the street, with the current office closing its doors next month.

The Post Office received 15 individual representations during the consultation and held a customer forum, as well as a meeting with town MP Sajid Javid.

Despite hundreds of customers expressing their objections to the branch's closure since it was announced last January, the Post Office is insisting its relocation will make its services more sustainable.

Roger Gale, general manager for the Post Office's Crown network, said: "Our customers’ needs continue to change and we are responding to that, taking the right action to sustain our services for years to come.

"WHSmith already operates around 100 Post Office branches throughout the UK and we have been successfully working with them for nearly ten years. They have a proven record of running Post Offices with consistently high levels of customer service."

The new High Street branch is set to have longer opening hours, the same wide range of services and will boast six serving positions, with low-level counters, PIN pads, hearing loops and customer seating.

It will be open from 9am until 5.30pm Monday to Saturday - 4.5 hours more a week than the current branch.

There will be new automatic entrance doors fitted before the branch opens and plans are currently being discussed to construct a designated disabled bay near to the store.

The last day of service at the current branch will be February 8, before the new one opens on February 9.

The Post Office has confirmed that none of the branch's staff members will face compulsory redundancy.
