AN application to demolish the arson-hit clubhouse on the former North Worcestershire Golf Club has been approved by Birmingham City Council.

The site, on Hanging Lane, was previously subject to a planning application from developers Bloor Homes last year, to redevelop the 80-acre site with 1,000 homes.

Just weeks after planners rejected the move, the vacant club house was hit by a suspected arson attack, but on January 18 the council passed plans to demolish the building.

Cllr Andy Cartwright, who has campaigned against the plans, said: “I have had quite a few residents get in touch with me about this and they are all against it being demolished.

“The thing is, I am on the fire authority and they said it is left open, vulnerable and liable to get set on fire again. For those reasons we would rather have it demolished.

“I put this to residents and many have ‘ummed and ahhed’ about it.

“I am not saying it should be built on and not saying it shouldn’t.

“But what we need is to sit round the table and come up with something that suits the residents, the councillors, the city, and the golf club as well.

“I have always stuck up for the residents and I think they should have their say.”

Bloor Homes did not want to make a comment when approached by the Advertiser.

Cllr Cartwright is eager to set up a meeting on the issue between councillors, Birmingham Northfield MP Richard Burden, Bloor Homes, North Worcestershire Golf Club, and residents.
