A councillor has slammed the ‘crass stupidity’ of removing road safety ‘child bollards’ form outside two local schools.
Rubery Councillor Peter McDonald is celebrating after Worcestershire County Council agreed to reinstate the distinctive safety bollards at Lickey Hills and Beaconside schools.
The Lickey Hills one has been replaced, while the Beaconside one is scheduled to be reinstated.
But Councillor McDonald is demanding to know why they were removed in the first place.
The bollards had been successful in reducing accidents; making motorists aware of young children,” he said.
“No one could understand the County Council’s logic in removing them in the first place: it was an act of crass stupidity.
“An investigation is now underway into why they were removed and the manner in which they were removed.
“It’s hard to believe that they were removed in the first place, which was followed by outrage which stopped the County Council in its tracks from their objective to remove all Child Bollards from our schools.”
While the replacement Lickey bollard is not in its original place, Councillor McDonald said it still makes motorists aware of children.”
A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: The bollard on the Old Birmingham Road has been installed in its new position very close to the Lickey school signs. We are currently confirming the position for the Beaconside School bollard. The child bollards in Gunner Lane at Holywell School remain in place. An investigation is ongoing. In consultation with our specialist officers and key partners, we will examine the road safety implications of these features."
