BROMSGROVE District Council is well on the way to ensuring its buildings are powered by renewable energy sources as part of its response to the climate change emergency.
In April the council changed electricity suppliers to EDF Renewable for Business, and despite a cost increase of 0.003 per cent, is cutting carbon emissions.
The council is due to explore moving to a tariff where renewable energy is purchased directly from generators or from companies who only source energy from renewable energy generators.
Portfolio-holder for climate change, Cllr Michael Thompson said: “The recent IPCC report states unequivocally the damage that humans have caused contributing to global warming.

“Combatting climate change is a collective responsibility - this is a major step to reduce the council’s carbon footprint.”
Members declared a Climate Change Emergency in 2019 and have since developed an action to reduce carbon (ARC) plan to reach net zero on emissions and to ensure its buildings are energy efficient.
For property services, this also includes programmes to swap to LED lighting and more solar panels to add to those that have been in place since 2012.
Cllr Thompson added: “While our energy provider is now totally renewable, we are also looking at the feasibility of producing our own renewable energy. The depot is already installed with solar panels.”
