A NEW dance academy has opened in Rubery, transforming a derelict factory site into a huge studio for youngsters.
Lauren McGeowen set up Dance Box Academy in 2019 after a few years of experience teaching at another academy.
Previously Dance Box was situated at various community centre across Alvechurch, Rubery and Barnt Green but in June, Lauren brought the lease for 51, The Avenue and created a super hub for all her groups.
At the age of 20, Lauren has years of experience, starting her dance teacher career at the tender age of 14.
“I started at the age of 14 assisting a teacher then became a teacher myself at the age of 16. After a while I thought to myself that I could take on my dance academy if I was teaching on my own anyway,” said Lauren.
“Before we opened the new studio, we ran classes on evenings throughout the week but now we have 41 sessions.
“We have gained a lot of clients through Facebook and recommendations.
“Before we moved into the premise, we had around 150 children on the books, now we have 240."
The academy caters for those aged between three years old and 17 but also offer toddler and parents classes.

Lauren added: “I want to turn it into a nursery as well next year as I have nursery experience as well.
“As a dance academy we have already created a good reputation for ourselves in the local area and I cannot wait to expand our name further afield!”
