Droitwich 36
Berkswell 20
Midlands Division Three West (South)
DROITWICH managed to subdue a stubborn Berkswell and Balsall side at the Memorial Ground on Saturday to keep up their push for promotion.
They made several changes from the previous week, with veteran Jon Andrews returning to number eight, while young winger Andy Vizor made his first league start.
The Spa side seemed to take an age to get out of the blocks, by which time Berkswell had scored a try in the corner to take the lead.
Droitwich finally got their act together, with a fine long kick from Matt Blackmore allowing centres Jonny Critchlow and Ross Coombes to create pressure for scrum-half Steve Poke squeeze over for a try in the corner.
More strong work by second row forwards Matt Jupp and Paul Sweeney saw Critchlow break forward to find Blackmore in support to crash over to give Droitwich the lead.
Duncan Hughes added the conversion. The home side then tried to run the ball from their own '22, only to gift possession back to Berkswell, who used the blind side intelligently to level the score.
A penalty from each side ended the scoring for the first period.
The second half saw Droitwich up their game, creating pressure in the Berkswell half, before outside half Hughes intercepted a loose pass to gallop 40 metres and give Droitwich the lead.
More pressure from the home side allowed them to push for victory, but strong defence and over elaboration meant Berkswell managed to clear their lines.
They broke and scored a try of their own, but the simple conversion was missed to leave Droitwich with a slender two point lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
Droitwich managed to find another gear, and a good lineout take was driven 15 metres before Nick Godfrey peeled off to score.
Hughes added the conversion. Good ground from Phil Horton set up one more attack and a long pass was thrown to Critchlow, who cut through the defence to wrap up the win.
