NEARLY 2,000 residents attended Bromsgrove’s proclamation of King Charles III over the weekend.

On Sunday, September 11 a huge crowd gathered in front of the bandstand in Sanders Park to witness the official proclamation of the new King.

Kicking off the historic ceremony, town crier Kevin Ward introduced the deputy lieutenant of Worcestershire, Paul West who welcomed everyone with an introductory speech.

He said: “Our profound sadness at this time is shared by many people across the globe as we remember with affection and gratitude the extraordinary lifetime of service given by our longest reigning monarch.

“But the basis on which our monarchy is built has insured that through the centuries the crown has passed in an unbroken line of succession.”

The deputy lieutenant then passed over to Bromsgrove District Council chairman, Rod Laight who read out the proclamation.

Cllr Laight along with other district chairmen and mayors collected their copies of the proclamation from the Guildhall in Worcester after the official county ceremony.

After the event, Cllr Laight said: “The turnout was wonderful. The depth of feeling shared between everyone on the death of the Queen and tour new monarch was very clear.

“We had a chorus of the national anthem, which was rendered in a tremendous way. It was the first time for many people singing God save the King.

“We then had three cheers of thanks for His Majesty from all those in attendance.”

Cllr Laight added: “There was a real sense of history amongst people and the town was very well represented by dignitaries and residents.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service, Hereford and Worcester Fire Service and West Mercia Police also attended the ceremony along with the Bromsgrove Court Leet and members from the British Legion.
