WORCESTER Warriors' men's team have been suspended by the RFU for the remainder of the 2022/23 season and will be relegated to the Championship for the 2023/23 campaign.
It comes after the club entered administration last Monday, as well as the players and staff becoming unemployed on Wednesday after the company that employs the players and staff was liquidated in court.
And now the RFU have acted. Warriors' men's team will be suspended from both the Gallagher Premiership and the Premiership Rugby Cup, as well as all European competition for the rest of the current campaign.
They will then be relegated to the Championship for the 2023/23 season.
All of this is subject to appeal from the club and an RFU statement did suggest that they were encouraged by the progress made by administrators Begbies Traynor and the action they have taken is with the club's best interests to find a long-term solution to their financial crisis.
"The RFU’s Club Financial Viability Group is encouraged by the progress made by the administrators, including relating to the land around Sixways Stadium.
"It has taken the decision to suspend the team in order to prioritise the space and time to work with Begbies Traynor to support the prospect of securing a deal with the right investor, giving the club the best chance for a long term sustainable future.
"As the club no longer has staff and players on contract and with many seeking alternative employment, the decision has been made to focus on how the club can be viable over the long term."
On Thursday it was revealed by Begbies Traynor that they had been successful in becoming Joint Administrators over WRFC Trading Ltd, Receivers over Sixways Stadium and Receivers over the shares together with any other Fixed Security Assets of Worcester Sports Limited.
