TWO heartbroken cousins who thought they had lost their whole family in a devastating earthquake are travelling to Turkey to support their loved ones.

Bekir Babir, who owns Charlie’s Kebab House in Bromsgrove, and his cousin Bekir Gungormez have lost family members and friends in a deadly earthquake on February 6 which has killed at least 35,000 people in Turkey.

Mr Gungormez said the night they heard the news, he ‘thought he had lost everyone’.

He said three of his cousins have died and some of his family could be beneath piles of rubble as he hasn’t heard from them.

Mr Gungormez has three sisters, three brothers, his mother, father and many aunties, uncles, nephews, and nieces living in the city of Kahramanmaras and the village of Tevekkeli Koyu.

“When my father called me on that night [February 6] he sounded like he had lost his mind. I will never forget that night,” said Mr Gungormez.

“My sister has lost her house – it is completely demolished; she is staying with her four sons at a school near where their house was.

“Some of my family like my nieces and nephews and my mom and dad are staying with one of my brothers in his little shop.

“For the first three of four days when we were trying to contact my family, it was like hell, we didn’t know what to do.

“Some people have no clothes, no shoes, they are just staying in a tent - some people are sleeping in buses.

“The situation is really bad - the place is too big that has been affected.

“There is a lot of help coming for people now – the whole world is helping but to start with when the earthquake first happened, the help was very slow.”

Mr Gungormez aged 34 and Mr Babir felt helpless living in the UK and not being able to help their loved ones.

So, the kind-hearted pair set up a fundraising page to raise money for essential items such as food and clothes for people in Turkey affected by the disaster.

Nearly £3,000 has been raised since the fundraising page went live at the end of last week.

Mr Gungormez, who moved to the UK more than 15 years ago with his wife, said: “My cousin has flown to Turkey, and he will be back in three to four days and then I will be going on my own.

“Bekir has also taken nearly £3,000 in cash donations from people as well.

“He is going to buy some food, clothes and anything people need as there is nobody to get food for families.

“We want to help as much as we can but being in the UK and not being able to help anyone is even worse.

“I have seen a lot of earthquakes on the news and I have never helped anyone but now it’s happened in my city I feel so ashamed I have never helped before.

Mr Gungormez, who has three children, added: “We have had so much support. Bromsgrove is very kind. Thank you so much.”
