THE founder of an animal and bird sanctuary in Tardebigge has died.
Maureen Lawless, the founder of The Farm Animal and Bird Sanctuary died aged 85 on April 23.
Maureen was also an award-winning journalist, achieving gongs for her investigations into many subjects – most notably animal cruelty.
Her main journalistic work involved highlighting cruelty to farm animals that exist in certain areas.
Much of her work concentrated on exposing the cruel and dangerous practice of shipping live animals for slaughter.
She was also an author, penning two books ‘chimps with Everything’ and ‘Molly’s Zoo’ detailing the life and history of Twycross Zoo.
Maureen’s family and friends said: “Her concern for animals of all species, but particularly sheep, led to her setting up a haven for maltreated and abandoned farm animals.
“Sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, geese, and others were welcomed to her property which was destined to become the charity known as The Farm Animal & Bird Sanctuary.
“The charity will continue in the very capable hands of Jo White, Maureen’s right hand for over 25 years, ensuring that there will be a safe home for needy animals into the future.
“Maureen will be sadly missed by all who knew her.”
