AN EXPLOSION of an undetonated bomb pulled from the river Severn was carried out in a field on the outskirts of Worcester.

People were warned not to be alarmed if they heard a loud explosion after magnet fishers pulled a suspected 'bomb' from the River Severn this morning (Tuesday).

Army bomb disposal experts checked the device over on South Quay where it was X-rayed before being taken to the field near the Ketch roundabout to be detonated.

The bomb disposal experts along with police officers gathered on the field near the Ketch viewpoint where a flash of fire and smoke could be seen.

Officers originally said the bomb was to be exploded in a field near Powick.

A Malvern police spokesperson said: "Following a magnet fisher locating a potential explosive device in Worcester city centre, bomb disposal experts will shortly be conducting a controlled explosion near Powick.

"There will be a loud explosion which is nothing to be concerned about."

When the bomb was removed from the banks of the River Severn, a soldier was seen taking the device from South Quay in Worcester to be X-rayed.

People gathered on Worcester Bridge to watch the action while New Road to Deansway remained closed by police.

It caused traffic chaos in the city centre as cars and people were diverted away from Worcester Bridge.

A police roadblock was placed outside Worcester Cathedral with cars heading to Deansway forced to turn back towards Sidbury.

Sidbury was already experiencing long delays thanks to roadworks on London Road.

All roads have now reopened.
