A homebuilder has made a donation to a community scheme that tackles loneliness in older men.

Barratt Homes West Midlands has renewed its support for Bromsgrove Men in Sheds, a group run by Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest (BRWF).

This will be the housebuilder's third consecutive year of sponsorship to the Shed Share Scheme.

The initiative, introduced by Age UK Cheshire in 2008, aims to reduce loneliness and isolation in older men which can often follow retirement.

The first 'Bromsgrove Shed' was established at The Craft Centre at Stoke Prior in December 2015, before relocating to a larger facility at the Metal and Ores Industrial Estate in April 2016.

Jo Hughes, of Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest, said: "We are really grateful to Barratt Homes West Midlands for their continued support for the Bromsgrove Shed.

"In recent years we have all been reminded of the importance of social connections and a sense of belonging.

"Initiatives such as Bromsgrove Men in Sheds have never been needed more."

The Shed, situated close to Barratt Homes' Folliott’s Manor development in Stourport, provides an inviting space for members to work on DIY projects, furniture reclamation, and foster community spirit.

The Shed Share Sponsorship Scheme, launched by Age UK BRWF in 2018, allows community businesses and organisations to sponsor a 'Shed Share' for a year.

The sponsors are then issued with a Shed Share certificate and their support is recognised in multiple ways to both Age UK BRWF and the Shedders.

Adrian Evans, managing director at Barratt Homes West Midlands, said: "We’re proud to support Bromsgrove Men in Sheds for a third successive year with our sponsorship renewal and we hope the group can continue to deliver its fantastic services."
