A road was forced to close last night as firefighters tackled a blaze from an underground electrical main.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) sent crews from Bromsgrove Fire Station to the scene on Birmingham Road after they were called at around 5.27pm on Wednesday (May 22).

The fire service said they arrived to find an electrical main below ground that was well alight at the junction of All Saints Road.

The electrics were isolated by the National Grid and the fire was extinguished using a CO2 extinguisher. There were no casualties reported.

Police were also in attendance and the road was closed in both directions from the A38 junction.

Worcestershire County Council warned drivers to stay away from the area and find an alternative route whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson for HWFRS said: "A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crew from Bromsgrove Fire Station was called at 5.27pm on May 22 to a fire in the open in Birmingham Road, Bromsgrove.

"An electrical main below ground was well alight. Electrics were isolated by National Grid and the fire was extinguished using a CO2 extinguisher. The area was also dampened down.

"The road was closed in both directions with police also in attendance. There were no casualties. The incident was marked as pending closure at 7.10pm."

Residents also reported a power cut in the area following the fire with as many as 217 homes left without power for a few hours whilst the National Grid carried out emergency repairs.

A spokesperson for the National Grid said: "We are aware of this power cut incident which was raised at 5.36pm this evening and our engineers are working to get the power returned as quickly as possible.
