RECYCLING bins were destroyed following a fire in a supermarket's car park.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) crew attended from Droitwich Fire Station in the early hours of Sunday, June 16 to find four recycling bins had been set alight in Morrisons' car park.

Resident Patricia Hambly said: "I went down on that particular Monday to get rid of some boxes, and to my horror found that some of the skips had been set fire to.

"I rang the council to enquire about it and to ask whether they would be replacing the skips - to which they replied 'no'.

"It's a shame, because I reckon that people may end up discarding their recycling on our lovely countryside."

HWFR crews extinguished the fire and dampened down the surrounding area, with three bins left destroyed.

Tim Lewis, Wychavon District Council's head of client services, said: “Unfortunately two of our recycling banks were vandalised and set on fire.

"We have arranged for a specialist contractor to remove them. If anyone has any information about this incident they should contact the police.”
