Police have issued a warning to residents after a man was reported knocking on doors and pretending to work for the council.

West Mercia Police said a man in his 30s knocked on the door of a woman in Southcrest Road last Tuesday (August 6) saying he worked for Bromsgrove District Council.

Officers said the man claimed to have come to look at some work on her property even though it was privately owned.

The has been described as being around 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins tall with short brown hair.

He was clean-shaven and was wearing jeans and a pale blue short-sleeved shirt.

He was also driving a silver car.

The man showed a card with the words ‘Bromsgrove Council’ on it during the incident at around 2.20pm.

It is believed that he was also visiting other properties in the area.

The woman also checked with the council about his visit as she lived in Redditch, not Bromsgrove, but the council confirmed they had not sent anyone.

The incident is now being investigated by Redditch Police as a potential bogus caller.

Police Constable Daniel Freckleton, of Redditch Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Bogus traders and door knockers may do unnecessary work, or to a poor standard, or the price may rapidly increase. They may also be looking to commit theft at the homes they visit.

"We want residents to be on their guard and be aware there are individuals using unscrupulous behaviour to carry out substandard work or who may be looking to steal items from houses.

"We would also ask the public to be neighbourly and look out for people who might be vulnerable in their communities if they feel they can help."

Police are advising residents not to open their doors to anyone cold calling and offering repair work on their home.
