A POPULAR and picturesque Worcestershire walk has been named the best in the Midlands.

The Worcestershire Beacon circuit along the Malvern Hills has been praised by 1,807 Which? members, who have been asked to rate more than 51 of the nation's favourite routes.

The list saw Which? score routes of between one and 13 miles on everything ranging from scenery and wildlife to those that offer the best food and drink options nearby.

Overall, the popular route around the Malvern Hills ranked 33rd out of 51, with 80 per cent of people asked likely to recommend the walk to others.

The Worcestershire Beacon route, cared for by the Malvern Hills Trust, has a difficulty rating of two out of five, making it fairly straightforward to get across.

It is also among the shorter routes on the Which? list, with it being just three miles long.

The route also has a respectable accessibility rating of three stars out of five and was given the same rating for the number of places of interest on the route.

It was given high marks for scenery on the route, earning a four out of five-star rating.

And the picturesque route achieved three out of five-star ratings for its wildlife and visitor facilities.

Which? describes this as a gentler route than going to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon.

A Which? spokesperson said: "This route circumnavigates its lower slopes and provides panoramic views of the Worcestershire Plain, Severn Valley, the rolling hills of Herefordshire and distant Black Mountains.

"At three miles, it’s an easier walk.

"Refill your water bottle en route at one of numerous springs: it’s purified by percolation through fissures in the ancient rocks.

"This is a popular destination, especially in the summer, so get there early to ensure a space in the car park."

Beck Baker, Community and conservation officer at Malvern Hills Trust, said: “We’re delighted to see that the Malvern Hills have been recognised as one of the best places to walk in the UK.

"We hope that many more generations will come to enjoy this iconic landscape.”
