An Oxford college has launched an essay competition for state-educated students.
Oriel College is inviting sixth-form pupils in any of its seven link regions, one of which is Worcestershire, to enter the 2025 Rex Nettleford Essay Prize on colonialism and its legacies.
The competition aims to encourage critical engagement with colonialism and its legacies.
At least one of the two £250 prizes will be awarded to a pupil at a non-selective state school.
All UK pupils in year 12, or lower sixth, are eligible to enter the competition.
Professor Julien Devriendt, Oriel's tutor for admissions and outreach, said: "Colonialism has left a lasting imprint around the globe.
"The Rex Nettleford Essay Prize at Oriel College offers secondary school students a unique opportunity to explore its legacies.
"It also serves as excellent preparation for competitive applications to top-tier universities such as Oxford.”
Outreach Officer Carys Owen said: "I look forward to seeing this year’s submissions — particularly those from pupils at schools and colleges in Oriel’s seven outreach regions in the UK."
The deadline for submissions is February 21, and the winners will be announced at the 2024 Rex Nettleford Lecture on May 22.
