RESIDENTS of Cofton Hackett are calling for an alcohol-free zone in the village, but a recent meeting to discuss the application was shelved, following a request by police.

County and district councillor Peter McDonald (Lab-Waseley) was to ask for the junction of Groveley Lane and Parsonage Drive to be designated as a no-go area for drinkers in an attempt to reduce anti-social behaviour. However, police indicated on the agenda that they were not supporting the application.

On Friday it was revealed that they asked for the meeting to be cancelled with a view to re-scheduling.

Inspector David Shaw, of Bromsgrove police, confirmed that officers had asked the district council’s licensing sub-committee to defer consideration of an alcohol restriction zone at Cofton Hackett while the current situation was fully assessed.

He explained that part of Groveley Lane was the responsibility of West Midlands Police and West Mercia needed to check with the neighbouring force what measures it already had in place there to ensure that a consistent approach was adopted.
