a revolutIONary anti-crime device, supported by town police, is proving to be a big success.
The forensic property marking system, known as SmartWater, has been sent out through Neighbourhood Watch and more than 470 kits have now been distributed.
SmartWater is a colourless liquid that contains a chemical marker, similar to DNA, and can be painted on to property of any shape or size. The producers say that once dry, it is virtually impossible to remove, and will show up in ultra violet light.
Everyone now taken into custody by police is tested for traces of SmartWater, irrespective of the offence for which they were arrested.
Officers also use specially adapted UV torches which detect instantly whether property suspected as having been stolen, is marked with SmartWater.
SmartWater packs are available at the discounted rate of £15 through Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Bromsgrove, and have also been distributed to people considered vulnerable. Special street signs in areas where SmartWater is in use, act as an additional deterrent.
Police are also hoping it will encourage more people to form Neighbourhood Watch groups.
PC Mark Townsend, Bromsgrove’s local policing support officer, said: “This high-tech and innovative product is a massive deterrent to criminals and helps the police reunite stolen property with its rightful owner. We are absolutely thrilled with the take-up rate in Bromsgrove.”
He added that Smartwater also has a 100 per cent conviction rate.
Existing Neighbourhood Watch members can order a pack by calling 01527 586253.
