A campaign to find new members for HorseWatch has been launched.

HorseWatch was set up about 15 years ago to help prevent and detect equine crime and it currently has around 60 members.

The scheme aims to promote crime prevention advice and share information.

An automated telephone system is used to pass recorded information to members, who are also issued with an information pack containing crime prevention advice.

Members can borrow, free of charge, dye stamping equipment to postcode saddles and bridles or buy SmartWater, a permanent marker, which helps police obtain a conviction, at a discounted rate. The packs include signs for owners to display at stables stating property has been marked with SmartWater.

Mel Clarke, North Worcestershire Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator – who also runs HorseWatch, said: “Equine theft is rare and when it happens thankfully it usually involves the theft of tack rather than horses.

“Even so, tack can be worth many thousands of pounds and thefts are very distressing for owners and this is why it is important for anyone who owns or is otherwise involved with horses to join HorseWatch.”

Horse owners are asked to be vigilant and note descriptions and vehicle registrations of anyone seen acting suspiciously.
