BROMSGROVE RFC under-14s returned to action following the Christmas break with a 27-10 win over Hereford.
The first half saw Hereford playing with a strong wind and they were able to exert pressure on the Bromsgrove back line for repeated possession.
The Boars were unable to break free or even cross the halfway line for the first 15 minutes.
But when Nick Freer received the ball with some space to run into, he used his pace to sprint clear and score the opening try of the game.
This had an effect on both teams as Bromsgrove were now able to attack more freely and Hereford were a little shocked.
Continued pressure from Bromsgrove resulted in a five metre scrum, during which a stamping offence, spotted by the referee, resulted in a red card for a Hereford forward.
Oli Morton took the opportunity of a quick tap penalty and dived over to make Hereford feel the full effect of their offence.
Bromsgrove were now getting into some sort of pattern and used their player advantage to good effect, with a solid ruck just a few feet out giving James Harborne license to make the final few feet to score a bread and butter try.
Hereford, however, regrouped well and were close to the try line when the half time whistle came to Bromsgrove’s assistance with the score at 17-0.
Unfortunately the wind for the second half subsided and Hereford started much stronger.
Bromsgrove stood still as Hereford broke from deep in their own half to sprint clear and score the first points of the second half.
Even this did not seem to bring Bromsgrove to life as Hereford piled forward they scored a second from a short penalty which signalled their intent.
Hereford now had their tails up and, but for a try saving tap tackle would have brought the scores level.
That was Hereford’s last big effort and Freer took advantage of a solid scrum base to show a clean pair of heels to all and restore some respectability to the score.
Will Thompson then stepped up and scored a great individual try starting in his own half.
He side-stepped two tackles before running through a further two and as he closed in on the line dodged a final effort to score a try borne from pure determination.
