TOWN under-14s' first match of 2009 saw them win 5–2 at home to Wychall Wanderers to progress to the last 16 of the League Shield.
Town had a chance in the first few minutes when Dan Arnold split the defence with a great ball to Dan Strange, but the 'keeper blocked his effort and the defence got back to stop Cameron Wellington's attempt with the rebound.
However, a few minutes later Town took the lead when Matt Arnold and Strange combined down the left and Wellington scored at the near post.
Wellington made it 2–0 after a good run and great finish just before the break, and would have had a hat-trick but for a great save from the keeper after Arnold had stopped a clearance and played him in.
Wychall pulled a goal back early in the second half, but Town replied two minutes later when Matt Dyer stroked home a great free kick to make it 3–1.
Midway through the half Strange hit a great left footer to make it 4–1, but Wychall to their credit pulled another back before Ethan Godwin was on hand to make it 5-2 following up a great Wellington strike as he cut in from the left.
In fairness both sides could have scored more, with Wychall hitting the post and being unlucky a couple of times.
