Worksop 12 Droitwich 24
Midlands Division Four West (South)
DROITWICH moved into the next round of the Powergen Junior Vase with an efficient display at Workshop on Saturday.
Spa showed their new found confidence and determination by out shining Worksop in a hard fought game.
The side even had to bounce back from an early try by the home side and went onto dominate the match.
But success means that Spa will go into the third round, which is set to be played on November 26.
Spa took time to recover from the long trip to Worksop and the homeside took full advantage when they opened the scoring with a converted try.
The shock of conceding a touch down woke Droitwich from their slumber and Spa began to pile the pressure on in search of points.
Dean Evans and Ben Cottrell kicked purposely to force Worksop inside their own half as Droitwich pushed their hosts back.
Scrum half Steve Poke, who was named man of the match for his dynamic display, started and completed the move that allowed Droitwich to level the scores.
He kicked forward to Jim Richardson, who set up Poke for a try completed by Evans.
Leon Hopkins then beat three Worksop players to score an excellent solo try and make it 12-7 to Droitwich at half time.
Droitwich maintained their good form in the second half and Phil Horton grabbed another try, which Evans converted.
Horton then broke from the back of a ruck to touch down and make it 24-7. Despite a late try by the home side Droitwich cruised into the next round of the Vase.
Director of coaching Julian Bailey said: "To be honest once we got our noses in front we knew what we had to do and did it really well.
"Worksop worked very hard, but we had the confidence to go and win the game."
Bailey admitted that playing in a cup competition was different from playing in the league.
He said: "In a cup competition the pressure's off us. It's different in the league where you are always aiming for something or trying to avoid something.
"The Vase has been an enjoyable experienced and it's allowed us to cut loose a bit more."
