MY eight-year-son Nicholas now has a driving licence - but before you gasp in horror at what they teach on the national curriculum these days it’s a LEGOLAND Windsor one, writes TERESA PHILLIPS.
Driving School was, quite literally, the ride he’d been looking forward to all day. After a safety and road sign briefing from the enthusiastic helpers, Nick and his fellow learner drivers hopped into their colourful red and yellow cars for a spin round the track.
Great fun – but then those two words sum up our day at Legoland perfectly.
We started with an overview of the park on the Sky Rider, followed by a picnic in Miniland – always my favourite part of any visit and one which other theme parks just can’t compete with.
Nick, his friend Lewis and my friend Sam wandered from country to country, pointing out landmarks and moving trains. Not surprisingly, the Royal Wedding scene in front of Buckingham Palace was the star attraction. Energy levels restored, it was time to hit the rides, an operation that needed serious planning. Our longest wait was 30 minutes but the spring sunshine meant we didn’t really mind.
Dino’s Safari, Wave Surfer and Aero Nomad were followed by a soaking on the Vikings’ River Splash and an underwater adventure on Atlantis Submarine Voyage, a new attraction for 2011 which involves a tranquil journey among tropical fish, small sharks and rays.
Oh – and all ages loved the slapstick-filled Pirates of Skeleton Bay stunt show.
So much to do, invariably so little time but we’ll be back.
