Worcester Wanderers 14 Droitwich Spa 29
Midlands Division Four West (South)
DROITWICH stunned Worcester Wanderers to make it two wins in a row in the Midlands Division Four West (South) on Saturday.
Two tries in each half made sure that new-look Spa have added more fuel to stoke their early season promotion ambitions.
Last week captain Dean Goddard had told the Advertiser/Messenger of his and the squad's ambition to win promotion this season and Droitwich have made a promising start.
Spa have been handed a difficult start to the season with four away games in a row, but wins over Evesham and Worcester mean Droitwich are joint leaders with Old Halesonians after two matches.
Veteran Duncan Hughes was the catalyst for Droitwich with seven points and a dominating performance.
Spa started strongly at Worcester and Phil Horton won a line out and fed the ball to Hughes, who cut inside to score a well worked try, which he then converted.
Worcester piled on the pressure but Droitwich defended stoutly and resisted the home side's attempts to push over for a touch down. Spa's lead was reduced when Worcester scored a penalty.
But the visitors hit back when Jamie Faulkener led a break into Worcester's half and fed Jimmy Richardson, who ran 30-yards to score a spectacular try.
The second half was broken up by a series of penalties as both sides made mistakes searching for tries.
From a turn-over Matt Jupp set up Faulkener for a 60-yard run and try that handed Spa a commanding lead.
Spa's opponents hit back with two penalties but Droitwich had the last laugh when Hughes's dummy and set up Ross Coombes for a try that sealed a comfortable win.
Goddard said: "This was a very satisfying display, I thought our forwards were superb."
Droitwich will be aiming to add some vital points and keep their early season momentum going when they take on Copsewood in Coventry this Saturday (3pm start).
