Old Leamingtonians 12 Droitwich Spa 34
Midlands Four West (South)
SPARKLING Droitwich maintained their excellent form on the road with a convincing victory over Old Leamingtonians on Saturday.
Spa continued to make a mockery of their testing start to the 2006/2007 season by producing a dominant four try performance in Warwickshire.
Veteran Duncan Hughes also continued his own good form with four conversions, a try and a penalty for a personal tally of 16 points.
The large victory also made sure that Droitwich keep their place at the top of the Midlands Division Four West (South).
Captain Dean Goddard said: "We had to battle hard but we stuck to our game plan and came away with a victory. I'm delighted with our start to the season."
Spa were up against a Leamingtonians side that had a heavier forward line than the visitors but they soon opened the scoring when Hughes slotted over a penalty.
The home side hit back and took the lead through a try but Droitwich started to apply pressure and Hughes powered over to put Spa back in front.
In the second half Droitwich stepped up a gear and Ross Coombs collected his own high kick to breach Leamingtonians' defence and set up Shaun Walker for Spa's second try.
Droitwich were getting lots of possession because of good work in the lineouts by Phil Horton and Steve Poke.
Walker slotted over a penalty before Leamingtonians hit back with a try.
But Droitwich put the game beyond the home side when Leon Hopkins pounced on a loose pass and scored under the posts.
Horton was then forced over James Shewell and Craig Goode for a fourth and final try.
