Droitwich RFC 28
Silhillians 17
DROITWICH RFC got their Midlands Division Three West (South) season up and running on Saturday thanks to an outstanding display from Matt Blackmore.
Blackmore scored 18 points as Spa kickstarted their season with some fine attacking forward play.
Veteran Nick Godfrey was in inspired form, while Blackmore slotted two early penalties.
The ever-alert Stevie Poke then chipped forward for Blackmore to gather and race clear to score under the posts.
More good work from the home pack, in which James Protherough and skipper Dean Goddard where first class, saw Droitwich go close.
But it took a moment of breath taking excellence from number eight Phil Horton to extent the lead.
He gathered deep in his own ’22 to race the length of the pitch to score, showing an extraordinary turn of pace to leave the defence for dead.
Blackmore, inevitably, converted. This gave the Spa side a 25-3 advantage at the interval.
The second-half saw Silhillians come to life and produce some fine running rugby of their own, with the referee awarding a penalty try as Droitwich killed the ball on their own line.
The lead was soon wiped out when more strong running from Craig Mortlemans saw Poke make good ground to feed Sean Walker to chip ahead, gather and score.
Sils came back again to score, but Droitwich had enough in the tank to keep them at bay and secure a fine victory.
After the game Blackmore said: “Last week was a huge disappointment, but we have worked hard all week and deserved the spoils today. This will, hopefully, kickstart our season.”
